All consulting engaged in by the Hawai`i SBDC Network staff, as stated above in the italicized sentence, is for the purpose of educating or training the client. This means that Hawai`i SBDC Network consultants and their agents (such as contracted consultants) do not normally provide deliverables; such as, written business plans or sets of projections as do private-sector consultants. Providing deliverables is a primary function of private-sector consultants.
Through the education or training of the client, Hawai`i SBDC Network consultants and their agents must strive to avoid clients becoming dependent upon them. Private-sector clients often permit dependency in clients in order to maximize sales to the client.
