Business. A business is an enterprise that a client owns or manages. A client may own or manage more than one business. A business may have more than one client involved with it. Cases may involve businesses or may involve the establishment of a business.
Business Development Specialist. A business development specialist is a consultant who does not have significant management duties in addition to being a consultant.
Case. A case is a defined series of consulting sessions between a client(s) and a consultant(s) covering one or more problems. Cases are closed upon the mutual consent of the consultant and client or following a period of inactivity of 90 to 120 days. A client may have more than one case, even in the same year. The SBA, when it uses the words Business, Case, and Client, uses them interchangeably, but almost always with the meaning that the Hawai`i SBDC Network attaches to the word case.

Case Portfolio. See Case Management.
CDIS. CDIS is the Hawai`i SBDC Network’s Client Data Information System for collecting consulting and training data and producing management reports, including those reports necessary for reporting to the SBA.
Center Director. A center director is a consultant who is also charged with managing a center and all staff within the center.
Client. An active client is a person receiving counseling from a consultant. The counseling takes place in a defined series of sessions called a case. Clients become inactive when cases are closed. A client may be involved in more than one business and, conceivably, in more than one case.
Consulting. See Consulting Defined.
Consultant. A consultant is a change-agent engaged in economic development by providing directly to another individual in a session or series of sessions advice, analysis, focus, guidance, mentoring, questioning, problem-solving, and skill-building.
Continuous Consulting. Continuous consulting cases or hours refer to a case with more than one session.
Contracted Consultant. A contracted consultant (sometimes also referred to as an outside consultant) is a consultant that works for the Hawai`i SBDC Network under a contract for a specific number of hours rather than as a member of the staff. Contracted consultants are most commonly used to provide specific expertise, but also to meet a demand for additional consulting hours or to work with a particular client for a defined reason.

Group Consulting. See Group Consulting.
Information Transfer Actions. See Information Transfer Actions.
Long-Term Consulting. Long-term consulting cases or hours refer to a case with more than one session and either (a) five or more hours or (b) eight hours or more. This term is used only occasionally by the Hawai`i SBDC Network and when used is defined as to whether it is five or eight hours.
One-Time Consulting. One-time consulting refers to a case or hours with one session of one hour or more.
Session. A session is a single meeting between a client(s) and a consultant(s) or a single period of time devoted to preparation such as research. Sessions are composed of one-on-one consulting time, preparation time, and travel time.
